U.S. missing on billions from online casino gambling

March 06, 2009

The United States is missing on nearly $52 billion in potential revenues from taxes collected over the next decade due to the three-year-old ban on Internet casino gambling and by placing taxes the internet gaming instead, a study indicates.

Online casino gambling fans hope that the new analysis prepared by accounting firm Price Water House Coopers will help move forward efforts in Congress this year to turn over the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

Jeffrey Sandman, A spokesperson for the Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative, said on Wednesday. "There is a dramatic need to have a regulated system that protects American consumers. Right now, it's the Wild West."

The Safe and Secure Internet Gambling Initiative group includes a London-based Remote Gambling Association, which represents European internet companies that lost billions in market value because Congress passed the 2006 UIGEA law and they had to cease their activities in the U.S.

The legislation put by congress in an attempt to squash some of the best online casinos gambling in the U.S. by barring businesses from knowingly accepting payments in connection with the UIGEA, including payments made through credit cards, electronic fund transfers and checks.

Price water house Coopers' latest report of the amounts the U.S. could raise from regulating and taxing online casino gambling is about 22% higher than it was in 2007 because online casino gambling in the USA has grown in spite of the ban.
