Republicans Reject Calls For U.S. Gambling Ban Delay
November 11, 2009
Leading Republicans in the U.S. Senate such as Minority Whip Jon Kyl and ranking member of the Financial Services Committee , Spencer Bachus, have formally implored Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke not to postpone enactment of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, a 3 year-old prohibition of
Internet gambling in the USA that several Democrats have been trying to barrier.
"There is no justification for delaying the compliance date for the long-overdue regulations implementing UIGEA," noted Bachus and Kyl in the sent letter.
If the final rule represented an "unreasonable burden on regulators and the financial services industry," as some politicians have claimed, the Treasury and Federal Reserve could have thought over again the laws early in the new administration and before the industry began taking steps to adhere. This did not happen and the financial services sector did not petition to have the rule amended, they added.
For the time being, opposition stays strong, with the Poker Players Alliance lately commending Democratic Representative Jared Polis for publishing a column titled “Online Gambling Ban Has Failed, Should be Ended”.
